Japanese - English Dictionary Page

(as these words/phrases are most commonly used in fan fiction)

 

Fan Fiction warnings:

Yea you know you see all these warnings and labels on fan fiction.  So what do they all mean?  Here's a handy little guide so you know what your reading!

Yaoi - Male/male relationships that refer to a more sexual relationship.

Yuri - Female/female relationships that refer to a more sexual relationship.

Shounen Ai - Male/male relationship that refers to love aspect of the relationship.  I.E. Its gets kinda mushy :)

Lemon - Sex.  Sexual acts are clearly described and enacted as part of the story. (or lack there of, teehee)

Lime - Hints at sex.  Ok they don't give you any of the details but you definitely know they did it.  ;) Pure cruelity.

Angst/Anguish - Usually means the character's relationships are put to the test in some way.  Emotionally tortured.  Alot of times these fics will make you want to cry.  :(  But there is usually a happy ending.

PWP - Stands for 'Plot? What plot?'  Meaning they didn't bother to work up much plot this story is all about sex and relationships.  Usually accompanied by Lemon warnings.

Deathfic - Exactly how it sounds;  altho be forewarned these arent always as bad as they seem since deathfics sometimes involve reincarnation. But sadly not always.  :(

 

Terms

These terms are generally seen at the end of someone's name.

-chan - An intimate form of address.  Close friends and families use it.  Also used to address children.  You never use this with someone older than you that is not a close friend or family member.

-san - The common term used for respect.  Used often for strangers or people you don't know well.  Similar to a formal greeting.

-sama - A very respectful ending used for Gods, Kings, your boss.  People of very high rank above you.

-kun - Used by socially superior males to refer to socially inferior males.  Example:  High School males refering to Junior High Boys.  Is often used as a insult in fanfics.

 

 

Yu Yu Hakusho Terms

These terms are specifically from the Yu Yu Hakusho series.  If I have missed any, let me know.

Ningenkai - Human World

Makai - Demon World

Reikai - Spirit World / Sould World

Ki (also Rei) - Spirit power / Soul power

Youkai - demon

Tantei - detective

Kitsune - fox spirit

Hn - Hiei's characteristic response to just about everything.  Can mean anything from a grunt, to a annoyance, to and agreement, or disagreement.  Basically whatever fits.  

 

 

Words and Phrases

These are general words and phrases that can be found in just about any anime based fan fiction.  These one's have been selected because they appear fairly often in Yu Yu Hakusho fan fictions and more specifically Kurama and Hiei fan fictions.  If you are a writer or reader and wantto have a word added or defined please just let me know. baka - idiot, fool

bakayarou - dumb bastard, asshole

busu - bitch, slut (not seen very often in Yaoi centered fanfics)

diajobuka - are you alright?

doushitano - what happen? / whats the matter with you?

doushite - why?

gomen - sorry

hai - yes

honto - really, true

kasaan - mother;  okaa-san is a more affectionate way of saying mother.

kisama - (you) bastard

kuso - shit

matte - wait

muda - useless

nani - what?

nee-chan - affectionate wat to say 'sister'

ni-chan - affectionate way to say 'brother'

oneesan - sister (typically older sister)

oniisan - brother (typically older brother)

otouto - younger brother

sayonara - Bye, See ya

sensei - Teacher

shi ne - Die

teme - fucker

tousan - father otou-san is a more affectionate way of saying father.

imouto - little sister
