"Well, Hiei, I guess this is goodbye." The redhead said as he smiled briefly and uncertainly at the fire demon. The little youkai stared at the youko severely. He told himself that he had expected this to happen. He and Kurama, his best friend, separated by two worlds. He knew right from the very start that this would happen. But why hadn't he accepted that fact? Why couldn't he just let the kitsune go? Let him turn his back on him without regrets, without the pain that was wracking the very core of his body, his soul? Kurama took Hiei's silence
as a signal for him to go and leave Hiei, probably forever in the makai.
He felt it then, a crushing pain inside his heart.
He knew a long time ago that his eventual parting with Hiei would
not leave him unscathed. After all he was in love with the fire demon, wasn't he?
But Hiei would never know. Those
loving words would remain unspoken.

Kurama felt himself grow dizzy, adrenaline rushed inside his body. This was the moment he'd been dreaming of, becoming one with Hiei, finally. "Yes." News really travels fast, be it in the makai or the ningenkai. "Hn. He's fine." The fire demon said curtly. "What if I tell you not to go back to that world, Hiei? What would you say? What would you do?" "You know I'll refuse you." The fire youkai glared dangerously at Mukuro. "This is dangerous time, Hiei. Anything can happen. We are demons. We have no ties." "I have." The fire demon stated clearly, challenging Mukuro to contest his statement. "You'll have no peace. We demons are forbidden in the ningenkai. Beside, Kurama is a youko known for their indiscretions and Yomi...." "SHUT UP! I don't want hear anymore from you!" The fire demon turned to got then stopped and turned back to Mukuro. "Lay off Kurama. He's not your problem." Hiei looked as if he wanted to burn down something or somebody. "H-Hiei?" Kurama asked softly. Hiei sighed and pulled Kurama gently against him. "Mukuro...." "What did she do to you?" Kurama asked dangerously. "Nothing, just talking." The fire demon said caressing Kurama's soft cheek. "About what, itooshi?" The fire demon quivered at hearing Kurama's endearment for him. He tingled from head to foot. "About you, us." "So?" "She's not so happy about us." "And? Is it bothering you? Does it really matter?" The redhead asked anxiously still quite unsure of Hiei's feelings for him. His breath caught on his throat. He couldn't take it if Hiei ran away from him, leave him alone forever. He turned toward the fire demon tensely. Hiei sensed Kurama's anguish and kissed the sweet youko's forehead. "I'll never let anyone separate us, Kurama. Believe that. You're mine." The redhead cried joyously, embracing the fire demon lovingly. "You're the best thing in my life, kitsune." "And you mine."
