"So it's true?  You're really leaving the ningenkai for good?"

"Hn."

"O-okay.  I understand." ......  "Here, this is for you."

"What am I supposed to do with that rose?"

The taller figure shrugged.  "Whatever."

The forest became eerily silent.

"Goodbye, Hiei."  Kurama said with a tone of finality.  Ai shiteru and goodbye.  The redhead whispered silently as he opened a portal to the ningenkai.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Though you don't call anymore
I still wait here, baby
I guess, I'll knock on your door
Tap on your windowpane
Hiei sat with Mukuro in the makai.  The little youkai looked agitated.  After several hours of letting him be, Mukuro sighed and gestured to Hiei.
"Hiei, what seems to be bothering you these days?"
"Nothing." Came the short reply.
"Don't lie to me.  Your right arm's been emitting black smoke since you entered this room."
Startled, Hiei stared down quickly at his right arm and glared at Mukuro.
"Don't play with me!"  The fire demon warned.
Mukuro grinned at the fire demon.
"Serves you right for not paying attention."
The little youkai stood up abruptly.
"And where are we going?"  Mukuro asked.
"Need you ask?"  Hiei answered sarcastically.
"And need I remind you who is master here?"  Mukuro countered.
"Hn."
"You may go, Hiei.  You don't need to tell me.  I already know where you are going."
"..."
Hiei was speechless.
"And tell the fox hello for me."  Mukuro smirked and left the stunned fire demon.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 I wanna tell you baby

The changes I've been going through

Missin' you

Missin' you

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kurama stared at Hiei coldly.  What did the fire demon want from him now?
"Hiei, why are you here?"  The redhead asked in a bored tone.
Hiei's heart sank.  Kurama was still mad at him for choosing the makai over him.
"Kurama, I...."
"Hmm?  Hiei, I need to go now.  Maybe you can tell me later."  The redhead walked away swiftly, leaving the stricken fire demon behind.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Til you come back to me that's what I'm gonna do

Why did you have to decide?

You have to set me free

I'm gonna swallow my pride

And beg you to please

Baby, please see me

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kurama leaned wearily against the wall.  He was inside his room standing behind the curtain.  He had been watching the fire demon watching him.  Hiei wanted to talk, but he wasn't in the mood for talking.  Talking had ended for the both of them after Hiei's decision to stay in the makai permanently.  He didn't want to be hurt anymore.  Never again.
 Hiei watched desolately as Kurama intentionally locked his window.  He knew that Kurama was doing this to tell him to go away.  But he had to speak to the fox.  Gods, how he missed him!  He knew he was wrong in his decision to stay away from Kurama.  His pride told him to save a piece of his dignity that was stolen by the kitsune.  Saved it before the fox could wholly absorb it.  He was in love with Kurama.  He knew that, but still he resisted.  Now he was paying the price for his ineptness at handling his love life.  But he was not giving up.  He had to show Kurama that he was ready to commit to their relationship.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm gonna walk by myself

Just to prove that my love is true

Ooh, for you baby

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kurama glanced at his back and saw the fire demon following him on his way to work.  The redhead sighed.  Here they were again.  Will Hiei ever give up?
The fire demon stared at Kurama's back adoringly.  It was bliss to be able to see his fox in close proximity even if they didn't speak to each other.  He sensed Kurama's side-glances and felt the kitsune's growing irritation.  Please Kurama, please forgive me now.  The fire youkai whispered fervently.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ooh--livin for you dear

Is like livin' in a world of constant fear

I've got to make you see

That our love is dyin'

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The fire demon watched with blazing ruby eyes when he saw Kurama kissed a woman on the lips after work.  The two were laughing and chatting together.  Hiei practically smoldered when the female grasped the kitsune's waist possessively and whispered something on his ears.  Kurama gazed down at her tenderly and they kissed again.  The fire demon was so stunned.  He failed to notice that he was all alone the ningenkai street.  The buzz of the busy street muffled the sounds made by blood-red tear gems falling continuously on the hard, cold ground.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Although I phone, you ignore

Somehow I must

Somehow I must explain

I'm gonna knock on your door

And tap on your windowpane

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hiei gazed at Kurama's window one last time.  He was leaving the ningenkai.  Now that he knew that Kurama had found someone else, he had no choice but to set him free.  The fire demon pushed at Kurama's windowpane, relieved to find it open.  The fire demon went inside and came near the empty bed.  Where did the kitsune sleep last night?   The fire youkai clamped down the rush of pain inside his chest and reverently placed the tear gems he cried last night on the bed.  It hurt to say goodbye, but it was his entire fault.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Until I get through you

I gotta change your view

'Til you come back to me

That's what I'm gonna do

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kurama opened his room, yawning.  He was very tired.  He opted to stay at a hotel to avoid bumping into Hiei again.  After making sure that Hiei saw him `act' with a friend.  He knew that was the only way to make the stubborn youkai go away.  If Hiei thought he could play with his feelings again...  Kurama stared in shock at the dozen tear gems laid on his bed.  The kitsune felt the shiny red-black gems with shaking hands.  Hiei...  They were Hiei's!  Inari... what had he done?  Had Hiei truly cared for him?  Kurama swiftly left his room.  He had to go find Hiei before it became too late for both of them
Hiei's eyes widened as he saw a grinning Mukuro leading a pale-faced Kurama toward him.  The fire demon swallowed hard. Could that really be the kitsune?  Had he finally decided to return to him?  Mukuro watched grimly as the two demons stared unblinking at each other, neither saying a word nor doing anything to break the silence.  Mukuro suddenly pushed the two together.
"Hn!  Why are you two so proud?  If you love each other then say so!  You're only prolonging your pain."  The makai lord left in a huff, muttering about immature, ignorant demons.
"H-Hiei..."
"Kurama..."
The two locked gazes and a tide of feeling swept them both.  Then there was still no time for talking.  Their mouths were too busy with each other.
