Hiei had known about Kurama's indiscretions.  What was the jagan for anyway?  He hated spying on the redhead, but these past few days, he had frowned at the severe changes in Kurama.  Although the youko was as gorgeous and as enticing as ever, there was something ugly about his whole demeanor.  It was as if he was laughing at their weakness, human or demon.  Whereas before, the redhead had an innocent sensuality, this Kurama was more blatant, vulgar even.  The koorime knew of Kurama's "exploits" with Yomi in the bedroom and his nightly visits to Yusuke.  The fire demon had hurt very deeply and he blamed himself for the changes in the kitsune. Kurama may have forgiven him for what he'd done, but the fox was altered very gravely.  Hiei knew he had to confront Kurama.  Tell him that he knew.  He was Kurama's best friend and once, his only lover.  He should talk things out with the fox once and for all.

He found the opportunity when Kurama once again came to him.  The youko had wanted to make love to him right there and then, but Hiei had more important things on his mind.

"What is it love?"  Kurama asked softly, fingering the fire demon's chin.

"I'd like us to talk."  Hiei said quietly, moving away from the redhead.

'Hmm?  About what?"  The youko asked, yawning and fingering the silken crimson tresses of his hair.

"About you and I -- Yomi-- and Yusuke."  Hiei said, willing the youko to make contact with him.

The redhead stiffened and grew tensed.  He turned very slowly toward the fire demon.

"What did you say?"  He asked very softly, there were angry glints on the emerald eyes.

 Hiei frowned at him darkly.

"I knew about your "visits" to Yomi and your "adventures" with Yusuke."  He rasped.

"So?"

"So?  Is this all there is?  Why do you answer me this way, Kurama?  Do I mean anything to you?  Do any of us mean anything to you?"  The jaganshi ground out.

But Kurama merely pouted and turned his profile away from the fire youkai.

"Answer me damn it!"

"Don't you ever dictate me!"  Kurama suddenly shouted and jumped off the bed.  "You fire demon are nothing.  Yomi was right when he told me how insignificant you are."  The youko spat contemptuously.

The koorime bowed his head painfully.

"I don't need you anymore.  I've found the perfect partner for me."  The redhead continued cruelly, laughing as the fire demon flitted off.

Hiei landed on his favorite hiding, on the branches of a makai pine tree at the heart of the vast forest, hidden from view.  There, he could wallow in the darkness, bask in the pain of Kurama's rejection.  The koorime cried earnestly.  Kurama had paid him his due.  He knew he deserved it, but he hadn't counted on this crushing pain.  All his dreams of Kurama and himself falling, like ashes blown and scattered by the wind.

"Kurama... Kurama...."  The koorime whispered over and over.  Gods the pain, it hurt so much.

"I want to die...."  The koorime whispered.  But then, something inside him snapped as he stood up.  Every line on his body tense, ready for battle.  Yomi!  It was Yomi!  He was going to pay for poisoning the fox's mind and heart.  The fire demon flitted off into Yomi's territory.
