Kurama walked calmly and sedately next to Yomi.  Deep inside, his mind was churning.  This was the first time in two years he would be seeing his best friend again.  He was excited to see Hiei.  At the same time, he was a bit reluctant to see what changes might have taken place inside the fire demon.  Would he be wiser?  More sociable, taller and most importantly, heart-whole?  The kitsune was not blind.  He had seen Hiei fought with Mukuro at the makai tournament.  Hiei had been really attracted to the makai lord back then.  That was why the fire demon stayed permanently in the makai.  Mukuro's death was totally unexpected.  Kurama knew, at least, he guessed how this would affect his friend.  He was more than ready to help Hiei, but the youko was unsure if Hiei still considered him his best friend.  After all, they had drifted apart for two years and two years was a long time.  The youko took a deep breath, as if to ready himself for any surprises.  Yomi held his hand again, making him frowned.  Yomi was sure extra affectionate with his comeback.  I hope he's not turning this into something else, Kurama thought to himself silently as they both stepped into what was supposed to be the castle's throne room, hand in hand.

Hiei eyed Kurama and Yomi as they stepped in hand in hand.  The fire demon blinked his eyes, although his face remained impassive.  Kurama gently disengaged his hand from Yomi's.  A small smile forming on his lips upon seeing his best friend's obviously taller stature.

"Hiei, my deepest regret."  Yomi spoke quietly, but sincerely, bowing before the fire demon."

The fire demon nodded just as solemnly, his crimson gaze switching back to the redheaded youko, who eyed him in an equally measuring manner.

"Kurama, can we talk, privately?"  Hiei said matter-of-factly, without even a trace of emotion.  The startled youko's emerald eyes caught his for a second, then at Yusuke's, Kuwabara's, then lastly at Yomi's expectant gaze.

"If you'll excuse us then."  The youko said softly, following the fire demon who had already turned his back on them.

Yusuke clapped Yomi's back playfully.

"So, how is Shura?"

Yomi turned his frown into a small smile, welcoming the change of topic.  He was sure the air had turned positively cold.
