He extended a hesitant hand into the empty space and concentrated.  The youkai shivered.  Just as Minaro had told him, the portal to the ningenkai could be opened.  Another time he might feel insulted that the barrier between the two worlds, makai and the ningenkai, was letting him pass so easily because he was not an S-class youkai yet, at least not yet.  He would work on that in time.  Right now he had more important things to do.  The youkai manipulated his ki.  He could see the empty space coalescing into another world.  Ah!  That must be the ningenkai.  Without further delay, the youkai stepped into the human world.

 ***************

Koenma eyed the youkai as he entered the office solemnly and with very determined glints on the depths of his blue eyes.

"Please sit down."  The demigod offered.

"Thank you, but I'd rather stand."

Koenma stopped sucking his fukumen and raised a questioning look.

"What can I do?  It's Keshiki isn't it?"

"Hai."

"Well?"

"I know that Yusuke failed to explain everything about me and about what happened to Kurama.  So please let me start at the very beginning."

"I'm listening."  Koenma leaned back against his chair.

 ***************

He had sensed him!  The youkai cackled and sent a mental link to his accomplice.

 ***************

"You mean to tell me that the youkai, Fuyu is after Kurama?"

Keshiki nodded.

"Damn Yusuke!  Why didn't he tell me?"

"At that time, Yusuke and the rest of us were more concerned about Kurama's sudden disappearance.  He's in the ningenkai?"  Keshiki asked softly.

"Hai and he's doing very well."

Keshiki sighed, visibly relieved.  Koenma noticed the youkai's expression and made a mental note.
"Thank you, Keshiki for telling me everything and I can assure you that I will instruct Yusuke to watch closely over Kurama, although I know Kurama can take care of himself and if I know Yusuke, I'm sure he's already guarding Kurama very closely."

"Yes, I know."

"Hmm."  Koenma murmured.

"There's something else I want to ask of you, Koenma."

"Huh?  What is it?"  Koenma sat up straight on his chair, smiling encouragingly at the youkai.

"Will you allow me to stay in the ningenkai?"

"NANI?"  Koenma sputtered and fell back on his chair.

 ***************

It was nighttime again in the ningenkai.  The dark figure flitted from tree to tree and stooped in front of Kurama's apartment, specifically on the very window of the redhead's room.  The figure pushed gently on the windowpane.  It was locked.

"Hn."  Hiei snorted.  The fox must have locked the window after what happened the other night.  Kurama had suddenly stirred and awakened from sleep and the fire demon had darted off very quickly, forgetting to close the window after him.  Kurama must never know that he was doing vigils inside his room until Fuyu could be captured or most preferably, killed.  The fire youkai was determined to protect Kurama at all cost.  Hiei sighed and settled on the tree, fronting the youko's window.  He only hoped it wasn't going to rain tonight.

 ***************

It was so cold and so dark.  He wondered where the warmth and the light could be, reaching out a hand blindly.  Nothing.  There was nothing here.  There it was again, a strange frightening coldness.  He sat up abruptly.  Hiei gasped, reaching for his katana instinctively.  What was it?  He felt something hovering  nearby.  The fire youkai adjusted his eyes to the darkness and frowned.  A thick fog was enveloping the whole area.  The cold was already sifting through his bones and to think that he was a fire demon!  Hiei couldn't see Kurama's window anymore.  He removed his bandanna swiftly and opened his jagan.  Good.  Kurama was still sleeping.  The fire demon relaxed his stance, when he saw a shadow moving toward the window.  Hiei's ruby eyes widened as the shadow began to shimmer and pass through the glass.  The fire demon snarled and grabbed what seemed to be the shadow's feet, relieved to find them tangible and solid.  He was in no mood to fight a ghost!  Hiei threw the strange figure on the grassy grounds.  The stunned shadow gazed back malevolently at Hiei and opened its mouth, blowing red fire straight at the fire demon.  Hiei stood his ground.  If he moved from his position,  Kurama's apartment was going to receive the full impact of the attack and he didn't want that.  The fire demon was thrown against the window as the gigantic red energy exploded unto his chest.
