The gang stood at the very heart of the makai forest where the youkai was last seen.  Kurama stared at the wide expanse of greenery surrounding the forest floor, scanning for any signs of the youkai.  Yusuke at his side stood silently contemplating.

"Oi Yusuke, what are you so nervous about?"  Kuwabara asked from behind him.

"Hmm.  Just feeling a bit uneasy."

"I feel it too, like someone or something is watching us."  The carrot-hair Kuwabara added, edging closer to Yusuke.  Kurama did the same just as Hiei flitted next to him.  The redheaded youko was startled to attention, heart beating fast, but he forcefully clamped down any emotion and thought.  Now was not the time to get personal.  They had work to do.

"Glad to see you back, shrimp."  Kuwabara said, feeling a bit cheerful.  They were back again.  All four of them, together, back to back, side by side.

"Hn."  Hiei grunted.

"Whatever it is, it's coming toward us."  Kurama announced.

"And it's coming really fast!"  Yusuke warned just as a circular ball of energy headed toward them.

"Look out!"  Kuwabara screamed.

All four of the dispersed quickly evading the ball of fire that slammed against the forest trees.

"Whew!  That was close!"  Yusuke whistled as he settled on the ground.  Kuwabara was panting on his right, Hiei was atop a tree, Kurama behind him.  The youko snipped the air.  Big trouble was coming or had it come already?  He was startled when a cold hand clamped on his mouth and something stung his head, passing through his brain.  Everything went black.

Hiei glanced at his back.  He was sure Kurama was just standing behind him, but there was no sign of the youko.  The fire demon frowned and was about to undo the bandanna on his jagan, when the redhead reappeared.  Yusuke and Kuwabara turned and nodded to Kurama.

"I don't get this.  Are we just going to stand here and wait for the enemy to come out?"  Kuwabara began to whine.

"You're right.  We need to split."  Yusuke suggested.

"Fine."  Kuwabara muttered.

"Hn."  Hiei grunted an agreement.

Kurama merely looked at Yusuke.

"Kuwabara and I will go east."  Yusuke announced as he quickly put action to his words.  "Let's go, Kuwa.  No time to waste."

Hiei stared in puzzlement at a very sedate fox.
