Hiei opened a portal to the ningenkai.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here I go again
I promised myself I wouldn't think of you today
It's been seven months and counting and you've moved on
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hiei stood on a tall building, contemplating the deserted streets of the ningenkai. Everywhere he looked, he could see the face of a certain redhead

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I still feel exactly the same
It's just that everywhere I go all the buildings know your name
Like photographs and memories of love
Steel and granite reminders
The city calls your name and I can't move on
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The fire demon blinked back sad tears, struggling to maintain control over his emotions; he softly uttered a name as he saw the outline of two intertwined bodies.

"Ku-ra-ma...."

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ever since you've been gone
The lights go out the same
The only difference is
You call another name
To your love
To your lover now
The lover after me
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It was cold, very cold in the ningenkai and for the very first time in his long life as a fire demon, he felt the chill sipping through his bones.  He was walking now.  He didn't have any energy left.  He felt... empty.

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Am I all alone in the universe?
There's no love on these streets
I have given mine away to a world that don't want it anyway
So this is my new freedom
It's funny
I don't remember being chained
But nothing seems to make sense anymore
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There was no other choice for him.  He had to get away.  He had to.  The memory of two bodies locked in unbridled passion kept his heart aching, until he couldn't take it anymore.  No, he was never coming back to the ningenkai.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ever since you've been gone
The lights go out the same
The only difference is
You call another name
To your love
The lover after me
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 Another year had passed. The wound in his heart healed slowly, but it was still there.  He told himself he was never coming back, but here he was again, about to open a portal back to the ningenkai.  He had given up, but his heart and soul hadn't, and the mind couldn't dictate to the soul.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And time goes by so slowly
The nights are cold and lonely
I shouldn't be holding on
But I'm still holding on for you
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Kurama...."  The fire demon whispered softly, willing that creature of his soul to complete him, come to him at last.  He gazed longingly at the redhead stargazing idly on his windowpane.  How he wanted to rush to him, hold the kitsune in his arms.  But, the fox could never be his anymore.  No, not anymore.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here I go again
I promised myself I wouldn't think of you today
But I'm standing at your doorway
I'm calling out your name because I can't move on
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 Goodbye itooshi.  Ai shiteru.  Sweet, loving words.  No one would hear them now.  Hiei turned slowly away, shutting the reality of pain within himself, willing his tears to wash it away.  H e was never coming back.  He had failed for the second time.  How he wanted to die right there, end his suffering.  He blinked in surprise at the sudden attack of five youkais.

"Hiei!"  Incredulous alto voice screamed as the redhead brandished his rose whip against two of the assailants.  The fire demon stared in surprise at the rage on the fox's face, the face of his beloved, his heart and soul.

"Look out, Hiei!"  The fire demon turned too late at the ball of energy directed at him.  The next thing he knew, he was lying on the ground, crushed by the dead weight of the kitsune.

"Ku-Kurama?"  The fire demon called angrily.  Those youkais were going to pay.  In an instant the fire demon was on his feet, setting the fox gently back on the ground.  He faced the remaining youkais with a dark, sinister grin, bandage on right arm unwinding.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He was too exhausted, he needed to sleep to recover his ki, but he needed to see if Kurama was fine.  The fire demon sat on the ground and pulled the redhead's head on his lap.
"Kurama, Kurama wake up!"  He shook the redhead gently.
Hazy emerald eyes opened.
"H-Hiei...."  The redhead smiled bitterly.
"Kurama...."  The fire demon's hands shook.  Kurama was angry with him.  The kitsune was looking at him as if he was the last demon he wanted to see.
"Fate is cruel, Hiei.  To-to see you again and not see you again...."  The redhead whispered brokenly.
"Kurama, please take a rest first."
"N-no time. I-I'm going...."  The redhead closed his eyes, the tears falling freely.
"No!  Nooo!  Kurama you can't leave me."  The fire demon cried angrily.  "Dammit!  Open your eyes!"  Hiei shook the redhead until he was too exhausted to move.  Kurama was gone.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A curse, it was a curse.  He had him at last, only to lose him once again to the arms of another.  His Kurama had gone to death's embrace.  The fire demon's small, compact body shook.  He did not want to be alone anymore.  He was going to see his fox sooner.  If life couldn't bring them together, perhaps death could be sweeter, pity them, and let them be at last.  Death would bind them forever.

"Kurama, I'm coming...."  Hiei whispered, drawing his sharp katana.  "Meet me there, itooshi."  The fire youkai brought the katana to his heart.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hiei."
The fire demon opened his ruby eyes slowly and stared transfixed at the beautiful silver kitsune.
Kurama!  His mind screamed and his heart rejoiced.
"Am I dead?"  The koorime asked softly.
The silver kitsune frowned very angrily at the fire youkai.  The next thing Hiei knew, he was cosseted in the kitsune's warm, loving embrace.
"Hiei, you scared me!"  Kurama said tearfully.
"What are you talking about?"  Hiei asked in confusion.
"BAKA!  Don't ever attempt to kill yourself again.  You have no right, no right to put me in misery."  The fox said angrily.
"Kurama, I'm alive?"
The fox nodded slowly nodded, embracing his koorime again.
"Hiei, we almost got separated again.  Oh, itooshi, don't ever leave me again."
"You lo-love me?"  Hiei asked wonderingly.
"Always and I'll protect you even from yourself."
The fire demon stared at the discarded katana entwined by the rose whip.
"I-I can't believe it."  Hiei began to cry softly, reaction just setting in.
"H-Hiei."  Kurama sobbed and embraced the fire demon very tightly.  He was hurting inside for the fire demon, but it was the sweetest pain he ever had in his whole life.
"All those time we wasted."  Kurama sighed softly.
'But we have the rest of our lives."  Hiei said as he kissed the tearful face lovingly
P.S.  I thought about making this my very first angsty songfic, but.... I just can't do it!  Kurama & Hiei are so right for each other.  Who are we to go against two people so in love.  Get my grip?
