Hiei flitted into the opened window of Kurama's ningen house and found the redhead crumpled on the bed, shivering.  The fire demon frowned.  Kurama's ki felt strange.  Concerned, he went closer to the fox, placing a comforting hand on one shoulder.  Kurama stirred, rubbing his eyes with his hands as if wiping off sleep.  But Hiei could tell, the kitsune had been crying.

"Kurama, what's going on?" asked the firedemon in alarmed.  Kurama looked so...so sad, no, devastated was the right word.

"H-Hiei..." Kurama mumbled, a hand ghosting out to tentatively touch the little youkaii's face.  "You're here?!"

"Hn.  Baka kitsune!" Hiei snorted but smoothened what he just said by taking Kurama's hand in his and putting it to his lips.

"H-Hiei" Kurama whispered shakily, before clutching the firedemon against his chest.  "I-I thought you left me...for good.  Oh, Hiei!" Kurama sobbed.  Suddenly he let go of Hiei and buried his face on the futon.

"Kurama, who told you" Hiei asked softly then sighed.  He gently pulled Kurama in a light embrace and buried his nose on the kitsune's rose-scented tresses.  "Who told you, kitsune?"

"M-Mukuro.  Sh-she said I was a fool, believing that you-you would sacrifice your f-freedom for me...oh, Hiei." Kurama sobbed once again and attempted to pull away from the fire youkai.

"Oh, no you don't." Hiei said as he embraced Kurama more firmly.

"H-Hiei let me go onegai," whispered Kurama softly.

Hiei remained silent and merely tightened his hold on the fox, his fox.  The one he swore he would always protect, but leave?  Hiei frowned.  The issue about leaving the fox for the makai he had always avoided inside his mind and heart, believing time itself will give him the answer to his confusion.

"You stay put, Kurama.  I'm not letting you move away from me," warned Hiei  as he easily overpowered the kitsune and pressed him against the futon.  He eyed the startled emerald orbs and stared lower to Kurama's soft inviting mouth.  The fire demon couldn't resist any longer as he groaned and pressed his lips against Kurama's in a hard possessive kiss.

"H-Hiei,' Kurama whispered against the fire youkai's insisting mouth, but otherwise remained unresponsive and completely lax underneath the fire demon.

Failing to garner any response from Kurama, Hiei stopped the kiss abruptly and lay next to the kitsune, eyes staring at the ceiling.  They were silent.  Each one of them busy with their own thoughts.

"Is-is it true?"  Kurama hesitantly broke the silence.  He hated asking the question, but he had to know.

"What do you think, fox?"  Hiei asked back.

That triggered something inside Kurama.  All these time, he had known Hiei, he had been hopelessly in love with the fire youkai.  Moreover, he had been clear and determined on what he wanted and who he wanted and he wanted Hiei.  He knew that his love shone brightly for all the ningenkai, makai and reikai to see and he didn't care, no he hadn't cared.  All he cared about was Hiei this and Hiei that.  After all this time, he doesn't know if Hiei loved him back.  He felt that he was the only one in love and Hiei wasn't.  Kurama became angry.

"Since you are so open, why don't you tell me," the fox answered sarcastically as he jumped from the futon in quick, angry movements.  He felt hot all over and he had the most annoying headache.

Hiei merely transferred his limpid stare from the ceiling to Kurama's flushed face.

"Hiei...d-don't be like this.  Tell me how you really feel.  Make me understand," Kurama pleaded.

But Hiei bowed his head and refused to speak.  He knew he loved Kurama, always love the redhead no matter what.  But he couldn't-no they couldn't go on with this type of affair.  Always hiding from everyone, especially from Kurama's ningen family.  And what about his job, his post as heir to Mukuro.  Soon he would be replacing Mukuro as ruler of her territory, and Kurama...where would the kitsune be at that time?  Still in ningenkai or with Yomi?  Hiei thought bitterly as jealousy started welling up in his heart.  No there was no definite answer.  Kurama will have to accept that.

"I don't know..." Hiei answered raggedly, his mind in complete turmoil.

Kurama closed his eyes and stifled another sob that threatened to overflow and control his rational mind.

"T-that's it then...." The fox turned his back to Hiei and took a very deep breath.

"I-I better go..." Hiei said.  He needed to put a big space between him and Kurama right now.  He couldn't think clearly.

Kurama tightly closed his eyes to prevent tears from falling.  He was a youko, for Inari's sake not some demon weakling.  He will survive this on his own--no he still has his friends, family.  He will definitely survive this.

Hiei returned to his post in the makai.  He ached inside.  He knew he had hurt the fox, hurt him so much the fox may never want to see him again.  But he was hurting too and he didn't know how to stop the pain.  Gods what was he thinking?  Getting involved with the fox--with anyone for that matter...no--he shouldn't have gotten involved with anyone period.

 "Hiei."

 "What is it, Mukuro?"

 "Come here..."

Hiei muttered and cursed silently.  He did not want to be bothered right now.  The little youkai followed tha makai lord's call from inside her room.  It was dark saved for the one source of light from a single candle...

"Where have you been, Hiei?" Mukuro asked the fire demon softly, beckoning the youkai to come closer still.

"Hn.  Nowhere," answered the youkai as he stopped in front of Mukuro bed.

"Good."  The makai lord swiftly grabbed the fire demon and pressed him against her naked body covered with a blanket.  "Make it to me, fire demon, show me how good you really are." She smiled, showing the good side of her face.  She knew Hiei was attracted to the other part of her body that did not bear the scars of her dark past.  She laughed softly as the fire demon complied and pressed her against the bed, swiftly taking off his own clothes.

This is it. The final break up.  I will forget you, Kurama.  Hiei's last thoughts as he gave in to his desires.
